Hope

There’s no doubt that 2020 has been an incredibly hard year. Millions of people have lost loved ones to Covid-19, are experiencing financial insecurity, struggling with overall mental health and isolation. Add in the incidents of racist violence that peaked awareness and protests over the summer and then a historically partisan election and you add another layer of trauma and heartbreak.

One bright spot, though, is the way we’ve shown up for each other!

Love is the force that drives the world. And a study I recently read backs it up! I read that 9 in 10  people have taken  steps to support someone else this year—such as handling errands and chores, sending care packages, or calling and texting regularly to check in. In fact, most people are  providing more of this support than they have in past years.

By helping others, we’re building resilience in ourselves—and in our communities. Caring for others gives us a sense of purpose and agency that makes it easier to get through hard times. There is a reason why the word love is often accompanied by the adjective “unconditional”.  Practice it and spread it!

Love and hope are stronger than any medication that exists for mental wellbeing, but at the same time, it can be difficult to practice. Love requires a lot of selflessness but in this year of collective struggle we are building collective resilience.

In fact, a high percentage of people say that they feel better prepared to cope with future challenges because of how they’ve managed the difficulties of 2020. Life has been at its peak in terms of throwing challenges, making us bend and giving us plenty of reasons to realize that we are a part of nature and not the center of it.

And a reminder that what ALL things need to survive, are love and hope.

So, practice it and spread it to all people and animals. Care for oceans and forests. Consume a little less, give a little more, and lean into the greater good.

Seeing people win gives us hope.

Watching people express joy, and excitement when they’ve been pleasantly surprised, gives us hope. As we look toward 2021, keep hope alive, give, and receive as much love as you can and always strive for the win.

Here are two stories from my recent holiday giveaways to inspire you and remind you that love wins.
